Justice Minister urged to set up register for charities in Galway

A city councillor wants the Justice Minister to immediately set up a register of charities to combat illegal collectors in the city.

Councillor Donal Lyons says there have been a number of 'bogus' operators going from door to door purportedly collecting for charity.

Councillor Lyons liased with Deputy Noel Grealish to get the Minister to answer a parliamentary question regarding tougher penalties for people who steal from clothes bring banks.

Minister Alan Shatter says there are no plans to change the law in relation to theft.

He did concede that there were plans in 2009 to set up a regulatory body for charities but this has not yet happened due to financial constraints.

Councillor Lyons says that if a register of charities was set up, it would help combat bogus collectors.
