Irish Water says Connemara pipeline has not impacted water levels
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Irish Water has stated that it's confident that the extraction of water from a lake in Connemara via a controversial pipe has had no impact on water levels. The pipe, believed to be several kilometers in length, was constructed last week to feed fresh water from Loch an Oir to Galway Bay to treat diseased fish. Irish Water has stated that while discussions had taken place with operator Marine Harvest, no agreements had been reached and it's closely monitoring the water levels at Loch an Oir. In a statement, Marine Harvest said it's working closely with all the relevant authorities to ensure that measures essential to the survival of fish stocks can be undertaken swiftly and appropriately. The water is being used to treat AGD in salmon, which requires the fish to be bathed for several hours in fresh water on a specially designed boat offshore. The company says the use of the pipe is a short term measure expected to last about five days and follows extensive consultation with the local community group. Gardai are currently investigating alleged criminal damage to the pipe, which occured sometime between the 26th and 28th of June.
