Residents on the Aran Island of Inis Mor are to see an increase in ferry travel fares from today (Feb 1).

It's after the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht confirmed that its ferry contract to the largest of the Aran Islands is being discontinued.

It means the price of a return adult ticket will increase from 8 to 15 euro from today (Feb 1) - the fare price previously in place in 2005 prior to the department contract being issued.

The existing operator, Island Ferries, had sought an increase in the annual subvention and says the subsidy on offer did not make it viable for it to operate the new contract.

However, for the other two aran islands, a contract has been agreed between the Department to provide a passenger ferry service between Inis Meáin/Inis Oírr and the mainland for the period until 31 October 2017.

Galway West Senator Trevor O'Clochartaigh has called on the department to review the situation
