Date Published: 26-Sep-2012
There's been an increase in the number of men in the West of Ireland seeking help for domestic abuse over the last 3 years. Figures from AMEN support service for male victims of domestic abuse reveal a steady increase in those contacting their helpline and facilities. Last year 372 men reached out to AMEN, this shows an increase of 126 since 2009. Nationally there were 4,303 contacts to the service during the twelve month period of January 2011 to December 2011, a decrease on the 2010 figures. 24% of clients reported suffering Physical abuse; 38% suffered Verbal; 37.5% suffered Psychological; 0.5% suffered Sexual abuse. Director of AMEN, Eugene Wogan says the rise in the number of men in the West of Ireland is a positive indicication of a change in attitudes.
