The impressive indie quartet, Ham Sandwich play Róisín Dubh this Friday, March 2.
They had a successful 2011 following the release of their second LP, White Fox in 2010. That included the superb single, Ants.
“We were really busy. We were over in Reading and Leeds, we were in Popkomm in Berlin as well, and the Electric Picnic,” says the group’s singer Niamh Farrell. “We’ve had the best year.”
Reading and Leeds are two of the UK’s biggest festivals, and take place over the same August weekend. Did the shows go well for the band? “They were amazing,” she says.
“We were playing at the BBC Introducing Stage. Reading was fantastic; Leeds was brilliant, but the weather was horrible. At Reading, the weather was incredible and loads of people showed up to see us. A lot of people said they showed up off the back of us having a strange name!”
In 2008, Niamh gave birth to her son, Oscar, but she’s managing to balance her life as mother and singer.
“Being in a band is more of a weekend-y thing,” she explains. “He’s fine with it – he came down to the Electric Picnic, actually! He loved that, but he doesn’t like me singing. We were in the Hot Press tent and my boyfriend had to stop him running up and telling me to stop.”
Doors for the show are 9pm, admission €10/€8 members.
