Ignition get ready for lift-off

An emerging Galway band will officially launch their debut EP with a night of live music at the Loft Venue in the city next Wednesday.
Galway city five-piece Ignition recorded their five-track If It Hurts EP at Red Lake Sound Studios, Portlaoise last October – and it is already available on iTunes and Spotify for the past week.
But the band will also be selling CD versions of the EP at their gig in the Loft, over Seven bar on Lombard Street, next Wednesday night. They will be supported on the night by Lilo and Benny & Brid.
They have chosen two singles from the EP – the title track and Sometimes I Really Don’t – with Celtic Eyes, Moonshine and the Wildside completing the track listing.
“This has been in the works for quite a while and we’re delighted with how it has turned out,” said the band’s vocalist Cian O’Connell.
“The idea of the launch night is to showcase the tracks on the EP – but it’s also a full set, with loads of covers…plenty of upbeat, light rock that sort of gives a flavour of our own influences and what we do,” he added.
With Cian on lead vocals, the Ignition line-up is completed by Patrick Hamilton (bass guitar); Dillon O’Callaghan (rhythm guitar) and Donnchadh Wernstrom (lead guitar). Evan Smith played drums on the recording, but the band’s new drummer – making his debut on the night – is Paul Joyce.
'Writing the music is a collective really; someone will bring an idea or a riff to practice and if everyone likes it we'll try to work on building around that.
“The lyrics usually fall on me – but we've got some older songs on the EP that Patrick wrote the words to,” explained Cian.
Formed in late 2014, the band – whose members are from Galway city and Furbo – has spent the last two years gigging around Galway, with appearances at the Róisin Dubh, Galway Fringe Festival, Westside Arts Festival, Black Box and Galway Christmas Market.
