IFA says East Galway tornado wreaked havoc on area
Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Irish Farmers Association says it's a miracle that there were no civilian injuries or fatalities following a mini-tornado in East Galway last evening.
Householders and farmers in the area are now assessing the damage following the freak storm which hit the area just before 7 last evening uprooting trees and ripping off rooftops.
Eyewitnesses say it approached from the banks of the Shannon at Meelick and moved across Clonfert before heading for South Roscommon.
IFA Regional President Michael Silke told Galway Talks it was frightening to watch it in its tracks.
Clonfert resident Brendan Coughlan says the storm hit his house and appeared as a black cloud.
Siobhan Ryan of Met Eireann says such funnel-cloud activity is rare but not uncommon in Ireland.
