Cluid Housing Association has provided 188 homes to families in need across Galway city and county.

The figures are provided in the group's 2011 Annual Report which stresses that more work is needed to tackle social housing lists in Galway.

A total of over 4 thousand 500 Galway households are now on a waiting list.

Cluid has delivered 131 homes in the county and a further 57 in the city.

The not-for-profit organisation has welcomed the Mortgage to Rent government scheme which it says will be a vital support for the many families in Galway and nationwide who fear their homes will be repossessed.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Cluid's Head of Policy Simon Brooke says cutbacks in public funding presents a major challenge in meeting current housing needs in Galway
