HOPE FOR GALWAY COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT SCHEMES

Date Published: 10-Feb-2012
There's hope for some Galway community employment schemes at risk of closure after drastic budget cuts.
Organisations which employ people through the scheme can now apply to the Government for an increase in funding.
Training grants for schemes providing vital services to children, the elderly, the disabled and disadvantaged were slashed from 1500 to 500 euro in the budget.
It's anticipated the cuts will lead to the closure of schemes with the loss of hundreds of jobs in the West.
However, speaking in the Daíl, Galway East T.D, Colm Keaveney, said the Government doesn't intend to shut down schemes that are 'functioning well'
