A record-breaking 48 tonnes of silver bullion has reportedly been salvaged from the Galway coast.

Odyssey Marine Exploration, a US based deep ocean company says it's recovered the precious metal on board the SS Gairsoppa which is said to have sank off the south west coast of Galway in 1941.

The Odyssey Marine Exploration firm reports that 1,203 bars of silver were discovered 3 miles deep aboard the shipwreck.

This would mark the heaviest and deepest recovery of precious metals from a shipwreck.
