High-tech Galway litter bins to tell when they are full

High tech litter bins – that can tell you when they’re full – are to be installed all over Galway City.

Galway City Council has sought tenders from suitable companies to supply the local authority with 30 new litter bins, that are at the cutting edge of waste technology.

The Council has tendered to lease solar-powered waste-compacting litter bins “which will include a wireless monitoring system that will notify electronically when the litter bin becomes near to capacity”.

According to the tender all the litter bins are to be powered by a standalone renewable energy source.

A Council spokesperson said that the bins will be roughly the same size as the large wooden bins that are along the Promenade in Salthill.

These new bins, however, will be solar powered, and the energy garnered from the sun will allow the bins to automatically compress the waste material that is deposited in them.

“This means that when the bin is full, it will automatically compress, making more room for more waste to be put in by the public – they will allow twice or three times as much waste to be collected per bin,” the Council spokesperson said.

The bins will be rolled out in the coming months.
