Health Minister says no plans to close maternity unit in Portiuncula

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Health Minister says there are NO plans to close any maternity unit in the West North-West region. That's the message from Dr. James Reilly who says a report commissioned by the Department of Health is merely part of a nationwide review of existing models of maternity care. The report had sparked speculation that the maternity unit in Portiuncula could be under threat. However the CEO of the hospital group Bill Maher has also strongly refuted such claims. In a statement to Galway Bay fm news this afternoon, Mr Maher states that no such reconfiguration options have been recommended and that speculation is ‘unhelpful and upsetting for patients and staff'.
