Less than half of city householders, eligible to pay the household charge, have paid the fee to date.

Figures released by Galway city council reveal that just 12 thousand householders had paid the charge by April 2nd, netting one point two million euro for the city council.

Figures for the county have yet to be collated, but early estimates suggest up to 50 percent of householders have paid the charge so far.

The Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes is holding its national conference in Dublin today.

The event comes as new figures show over 600 thousand people have yet to pay the household charge.

Around 100 people have gathered to discuss a number of motions on proposed taxes and charges that the government plans to introduce.
