A 22-year-old-man with a record of burglary convictions across Ireland has been jailed for eight months for a burglary in Barna over two years ago.

Martin Wall, with an address at 106 Westwood Gate Apartments, Tallaght, Dublin 24, pleaded guilty to burglary at Claret Villa, New Village, Barna, on August 10, 2023.

The court heard Wall was a guest in the B&B when he entered a private area of the building and stole a money-box containing €2,000.

Sergeant Claire Heneghan told Galway District Court that Gardaí obtained the registration number of the car the group involved used, and Wall's fingerprints were subsequently found on the recovered money box.

The court heard Wall's 72 convictions included convictions for burglary imposed by District Courts in Mullingar, County Westmeath; Bray, County Wicklow and Thurles, County Tipperary.

The accused appeared via video link from prison and the court was told he was in custody on foot of an extradition warrant.

Defence barrister Garry McDonald BL said his client was a young man who had a lot of previous convictions, but who seemed to be "getting his act together" in custody by attending educational courses.

Mr McDonald said his client was anxious to put these matters behind him.

Judge Valerie Corcoran said that Wall had been a guest at the property and this was a "breach of trust" as he entered a private area and stole €2,000, which was not recovered.

Judge Corcoran said the court did not consider community service to be appropriate and imposed an eight-months prison sentence.
