GREENSTAR REFUSED PERMISSION TO EXPAND KILCONNELL SUPERDUMP

Date Published: 07-Apr-2008
Waste management company Greenstar has been refused permission to have a regional waste restriction on the Kilconnell superdump in East Galway lifted. The company was hoping to accept waste from counties outside Connacht but a condition in its 2003 waste licence prevented this.It applied to Galway County Council to have the condition lifted but this has been refused by county planners.Local residents were firmly against the application by Greenstar, and held a number of public meetings before lodging several objections.Mayor of County Galway Cllr Michael Mullins was among those to submit an objection.Locals argued that allowing Greenstar to accept waste from outside Connaught would increase the level of pollution in the area.Spokesperson for the Kilconnell-Cappataggle-New Inn Anti superdump group Tom Finn says the decision is great news for the area.
