GOVERNMENT TO PRESS AHEAD WITH CLOSURE OF CITY ASYLUM CENTRE

Date Published: 11-Sep-2012
The government is to push ahead with plans to relocate hundreds of residents at the city asylum centre at Lisbrook House, despite calls from demonstrators today to delay the transfer.
The centre, at the former Ibis Hotel, is to wind down, with up to 270 residents moved to other centres nationwide with jobs losses for 25 staff.
The Reception & Integration Agency is working to assign single males to the Great Western facilitiy in the city while it's understood there is very little accommodation available for families at the Eglington site in Salthill.
Priority to retain families at Galway centres will be based on medical need.
