Date Published: 26-Sep-2008
The local authorities are to be forced to improve public access to information on the quality of drinking water, in the wake of two water contamination scares in Galway in an eighteen month period.Environment Minister John Gormley is directing local authorities to publish up to date information on public drinking water and set up hotlines in times of crisis. Minister of State Noel Ahern announced the measures in the Dail in response to a scathing attack by Galway West TD Michael D Higgins on the culture of secrecy in Galway City council. Deputy Ahern gave this response to Michael D's criticism of the length of time it took the city council to inform the Galway public of the problem.
