Date Published: 16-Jan-2009
A controversial hotel planned for the Connaught Laundry site in the city has got the go-ahead.An Bord Pleanála has given the final go-ahead to Jaytar Ltd for the hotel at St. Helen's street, despite strong opposition from locals. After Galway city council originally granted permission for the hotel, there were 9 objections lodged to the appeals board.Local residents argued that the increased traffic from hotel would not be appropriate in terms of local infrastructure. However, the Appeals Board has decided to uphold the decision by the City Council and allow the hotel to be built at the Connaught Laundry site, subject to 17 conditions. This is despite an Inspector for An Bord Pleanála recommending that the hotel be refused planning permission.
