GMIT to take action on plagiarism probe

Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) has confirmed that it has started disciplinary action arising from the unprecedented external investigation into plagiarism and possible cover-up at the college.

In an email sent to staff, GMIT President Michael Carmody confirmed the college was taking disciplinary action on foot of the report of the investigation.

“You will have seen an increase in media coverage in recent weeks relating to internal matters in GMIT,” Mr Carmody told staff in a circular.

“I would like to assure you that matters arising from the investigation report are being acted upon. As we are currently engaged in a disciplinary process, I cannot comment further at this time and I ask for your understanding in this respect.”

Mr Carmody also copied staff on a statement issued to media, in which he sought to clarify what happened to retired GMIT President, Marion Coy’s emails.

The Galway City Tribune a fortnight ago published extracts from the external investigation, in which the investigator’s suggested Ms Coy’s emails were deleted after she retired.

The authors of the report recommended that Mr Carmody engage a suitable independent person or organisation to investigate the “deletion of Ms Coy’s email correspondence after she retired from the institute”.
