GMIT Student Union President speaks out against unofficial rag week celebrations

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The President of GMIT Students' Union has encouraged any residents impacted by unofficial rag week celebrations to contact the student patrol team.

Sam O'Neill says some clubs and pubs are advertising drink promotions for unofficial rag week through social media.

He says this is not condoned by the Students' Union and a change in drinking culture is now evident for the majority of the student population.

Gardai closed the Electric Garden nightclub on Abbeygate Street at about 11 last night where up to a thousand people had gathered.

It was due to concerns surrounding health and safety.

Gardai are also observing Eyre Street this morning where students have already begun queuing for 'Donegal Tuesday' celebrations.

Sam O'Neill told Galway Talks that the student patrol system is available for any residents nearby the GMIT campus who have concerns regarding anti-social behaviour.
