Gaynor Cup Squad take runners-up spot in Plate

The Galway Gaynor Squad finished as runner-up in the Plate section of the tournament, which was held over three days in Limerick last week.

The Galway side won two and lost two of their games in the Cup competition, meaning they qualified for the semi-finals of the Plate, where they defeated Kerry 2-0 with Eleanor Stafford grabbing both goals to book their place in the final against Waterford.

Galway dominated the final, but were hit on the break by Waterford for the opener, and as they went in search of the equaliser, they left gaps at the back which the Munster side exploited to score a second goal to take the Plate title.

This tournament was a stepping stone to the Irish U-17 Development side and Lisa Casserly (Colga FC) and Eleanor Stafford (Salthill Devon) have been called up to the international side this week.

There were also good performances from the likes of Saoirse Burke, Shauna Fox, Aoife Walsh, Alana Moran, Ciara Lynagh, Cadhla Gillen and Katie Carter, all of which bodes well for girls’ soccer in Galway.A great deal of credit goes to the coaches, Kevin Cassidy and Sinead Ni Cormaic, who have been working hard with the panel since September.
