Gardaí have dismissed a report in a local freesheet of an alleged drink spiking incident in a city pub.

The front page report earlier this month was based on a mother’s claims that her son’s drink was spiked – he apparently became agitated at a wedding after-party.

The report went on to say that urine analysis showed the presence of rat poison and “seven other types of drugs”.

However, a spokesperson for Galway Garda Station told the Galway City Tribune: “We have had no complaint of an alleged drink spiking incident. If someone has evidence or suspicions of a drink spiking, we would expect and encourage them to come to us, and we can investigate.”

The report has since been removed from the freesheet’s website.

Meanwhile, local publicans have expressed outrage at the report, which they said is hugely damaging to the reputation of Galway City.

“If this did happen and results of a urine analysis were available, why didn’t the person report it to the Gardaí? Every premises has CCTV.

“We are outraged that we can all be branded as somewhere your drink will be spiked. It is hugely damaging to the reputation of pubs, to the reputation of the city and the people of Galway.

“Will people now think that Galway City is somewhere where they can’t relax and are wondering who’s beside you?” one angry publican said.

Meanwhile, Gardaí issued a general warning in relation to people drinking on nights out.

“Always stick together, if you’re going home early, make sure you tell your friends and get a taxi. Don’t leave drinks unattended if going to the toilet or leaving the table to go dancing, and don’t accept drinks from strangers.”
