Gardai are urging motorists across the city and county to take care on the roads this autumn and winter season.

It comes as new figures show that 15 lives have been lost on the county's road network so far this year and a total of 28 in the wider western region.

Three quarters of serious collisions have taken place on weekend days between Friday and Sunday.

Drivers are being reminded to adjust their speed in certain situations such as severe weather conditions, darkness or high volume traffic areas.

A warning has also been issued on the use of seat belts and the risk of a serious collision due to the distractions of holding a mobile phone.

Garda Regional Traffic Superintendent Martin Cashen told FYI Galway that fatalities and serious injuries can be avoided if each driver takes care on the roads
