Galway TD slams delay in providing equipment for special needs school in Renmore
Galway Bay fm newsroom - A Galway West TD says pupils at a special needs school in the city are queuing to be toilet changed because they're waiting for funding for specialised equipment.
Labour TD Derek Nolan raised the issue of Rosedale school this week, slamming the Department of Education for the delay.
However, a decision on the funding is expected in the next 2 to 3 days.
Rosedale school in Renmore caters for children with severe disabilities, who are unable to sit up or use the toilet themseleves.
There is an increased demand for the changing benches following an extra intake of pupils of which there are now 26.
The equipment is essential for ensuring a standard of personal care, comfort and hygiene for the children.
Deputy Derek Nolan raised the issue in the Dáil this week where he criticised the delay in providing the 10 thousand euro for the school.
Responding, Galway East TD and Minister for training and skills said there had been confusion over the type of equipment that could be funded by his Department.
An earlier application for therapy beds as opposed to changing benches would have to be considered by the Department of Health.
A revised application for changing benches is now being considered and a decision is expected to be made in the coming days.
