Galway has lost more than 300 pubs across the county, according to new figures released this week.

There was once 800 pubs across the county – but that’s now down to 489, according to a new report carried out by DCU Business School economist Tony Foley.

And one publican and County Councillor has laid the blame for that at the door of Failte Ireland, which he accused of only promoting pubs in Galway city and Connemara leaving the rest to fend for themselves.

Kilconnell Cllr Timmy Broderick, who is PRO of County Galway Vintners, said that while pubs in the city and Connemara were on the tourist trail, the same could not be said of pubs in East Galway.

“We offer the cheapest pint, the best of craic, and entertainment that is second to none. But when it comes to tourism promotion, we are playing second fiddle,” he said.

He said that it was time Failte Ireland recognised that East Galway had a lot to offer in terms of tourism and agreed that the pub was central to this.
