A warning has been issued to prospective Galway students not to give in to unreasonable landlord demands as they prepare for their first college term.

NUI Galway's student president Paul Curley says that some students have been faced with landlords "faking demand to push prices".

His comments come as thousands of students across the country have received first round CAO offers and are now on the hunt for accommodation away from home.

He's advising students to "shop around" to avail of the wide range of quality accomodation at a reasonable price.

The SU President was speaking following the launch of the USI 2012 Rent Book which aims to provide students and parents with an easy, comprehensive guide to finding accomodation.

He says that while the large majority of landlords operate fairly and honestly, students should act cautiously to aviod making "bad decisions".
