30-year-old local Galway shop looking brand new after major redevelopment

The redevelopment has allowed them to introduce a number of new products and services while building on what customers already know and enjoy
A 30-year-old Galway store is looking brand new after a major redevelopment which has brought it into 2026 with a bang.
XL Clybaun Stores in Knocknacarra celebrated its relaunch after an investment from BWG Foods to enhance the store which has been opened since 1995 and joined the XL group in 2014.
The revamp of the store includes a full off licence as well as a coffee and ice-cream dock inside the premises.
There is also a wide range of products and services for the local community including a ‘Movie Night In’ deal which has proved popular with shoppers especially those with young families.
Business owner alongside Paul Shanley, Kevin Mullan was delighted to celebrate the relaunch of XL Clybaun Stores and the completion of the significant investment into the business.
He said: “The redevelopment has allowed us to introduce a number of new products and services while building on what customers already know and enjoy.
“XL Clybaun Stores has been part of Knocknacarra since 1995 and this investment demonstrates our commitment to the future of the business and to the customers who continue to support us.”
He continued: “I would also like to thank our manager, Naomi Flahery and the entire team for their hard work and dedication throughout the redevelopment and relaunch.”
BWG Foods Cash and Carry Sales Director added: “The relaunch of XL Clybaun Stores is a great example of the investment and commitment that independent XL retailers continue to make in their local communities.
“Kevin and Paul [Shanley] had delivered a major redevelopment that gives customers more choice and brings a number of new concepts and services to the store. We wish Kevin, Paul, Naomi and the wider team every success.”
