GALWAY SENATOR TO MEET EU REPRESENTATIVES OVER TURFCUTTING BAN

Date Published: 08-Nov-2012
A Galway Senator says the window of opportunity is now open to try resolve the ongoing dispute surrounding the turf cutting ban.
Sinn Fein Senator Trevor O' Clochartaigh will meet with EU representatives in Brussels today in an effort to find a solution that will satisfy both the turf cutters and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
53 bogs across the state, including 12 in Galway, have been designated as special areas of conservation.
The Government has offered compensation and relocation options but many opt to continue cutting despite warnings from the National Parks and Wildlife service.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Senator Trevor O' Clochartaigh says he is hoping today will yield some results for turfcutters.
