Galway-native Independent Senator Ronan Mullen says he thinks German leader Angela Merkel knows she's eventually going to have to change her mind regarding the anticipated bailout for Ireland's banks.

It's back to the drawing board for the Government, after the German Chancellor yesterday poured cold water over the idea that past debt would be covered by the ESM's bailout fund.

However, the Government is today insisting that it will continue to work with European leaders on the implementation of a deal to separate Ireland's bank debt and sovereign debt.

Now Galway-born Senator Ronan Mullen says the German leader will have to "give big" if the issue regarding Ireland's past bank debts are to be resolved.
