GALWAY SENATOR SAYS FUEL PRICING POLICY ENCOURAGES LAUNDERING

Date Published: 06-Apr-2012
The current practice of charging different prices for green and ordinary diesel needs to change.
Galway Senator Lorraine Higgins has called on the government to change the way diesel is priced, to dissuade would-be fuel launderers.
According to Senator Higgins current practice of charging less for green diesel, used in fishing and farming, encourages illegal activity.
She says government should charge the same for both types of diesel at the pumps, and off-set this with tax rebates for members of fishing and farming communities.
Her comments come after a major fuel laundering plant was discovered by customs officers in county Cavan last week.
