A specialised diabetic nursing service for children is to be established in Galway.

The new service at University Hospital Galway will mean that children with type one diabetes will no longer have to travel to Dublin for insulin pump treatment.

A similar support is also to be set up at the Mid-Western Hospital in Limerick with a shared staff of 1 point 2 posts.

Three thousand 500 children and adolescents are diagnosed with diabetes in Ireland.

Galway West Fine Gael Senator Fidelma Healy Eames hopes it'll be up and running by the summer.

She says staff recruitment must now be prioritised.
