Galway had the largest year-on-year increase in new buildings nationwide last year.

Figures released by GeoDirectory show there was a 39 percent increase from 688 buildings in 2011 to 1,314 last year.

The 2012 building stock comprises 1,197 residential buildings, 82 commercial buildings and 35 were dual purpose.

These additions bring the county's building stock to over 109 thousand.

The data also shows that 12 percent of new commercial and residential stock in Galway is now vacant.

CEO of GeoDirectory Dara Keogh says the Galway figures are promising but are coming from a very low base.
