Galway has been ranked at number eight for the worst performing counties in the latest housing construction index.
The data from the fourth index compiled by Link2Plans shows a continued drop in housing activity throughout Galway.
There has been a 20 percent drop in the number of commencements submitted here with 255 recorded from January to August compared to 318 in 2011.
There has also been an 18 percent decrease in the number of planning applications, a fall from 668 to 550.
Nationally, the index shows the number of projects that started construction is 10 per cent down on the same period last year - but that's an improvement on the start of the year when they were down 14 per cent.
There was also a significant increase in house building in counties like Westmeath, Mayo and Sligo.
