Galway puts its heads together to plan for future at unique event

A proposed extension to recording studios based at the former Letterfrack Industrial School – and owned by a well-known survivor of the abuse scandal there – is now the subject of an appeal to An Bord Pleanala by occupants of neighbouring business units.
Those who are opposed to the development say that the construction of the extension will cause overshadowing on their property and would also compromise their privacy.
Last month Ellis Studios, which is located in the former Letterfrack Industrial School, received planning permission for a major extension to the premises.
The studios, which are operated by Gerard Mannix Flynn, a former resident at the school and now a Dublin City Councillor, and Mari Saville, received permission to retain partially completed theatre building and three two-storey studios at the rear of the building.
Planning permission was also granted for the construction of a rear extension to the existing theatre consisting of a two and a half storey building containing backstage storage and a green room.
The green light for the development was granted subject to 13 conditions being complied with and one of these referred to the noise levels coming from the studios and the decibel levels allowed during the course of the day.
But this decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanala by two individuals who occupy units at Ellis Workshops and both related to the height of the new extension.
