Galway City and County Planning Authorities will be ranked for their planning and environmental performance in a new report to be released later this morning.

They'll be graded alongside the 32 other planning authorities nationwide under 8 criteria, including the percentage of vacant housing stock in a region - with 9 scoring Fs, and C being the highest grade achieved.

An Taisce, which carried out this study, says the publication of the Mahon report has seen renewed calls for investigations into the planning matters of local authorities.

The report 'State of the national:Ireland's planning system 2000-2009' will be launched in Dublin at 10:30.

Former chairman of An Taisce, Charles Stanley-Smith, says like the Mahon report, they're calling for the establishment of an independent planning regulator
