The number of planning applications being submitted in Galway dropped by almost a quarter last year.

According to the National Housing Construction index, compiled by Link2Plans, there were 736 applications in Galway last year.

This compares to 958 in 2011.

The number of housing commencements was also down by 20 percent in Galway last year to 348.

Nationally, planning applications were down 17 per cent in 2012, while the number of projects started was down 8 per cent.

Managing Director of Link2Plans, Danny O'Shea, says the study found that there's a shortage of suitable housing in urban areas.
