‘Please don’t just us as parents. Just let our family’s experience be a warning’

These Galway parents have said “please don't judge us” as their son was rushed to hospital after his charging phone exploded.

They got in touch with Loughrea Fire and Rescue to share their terrifying story.

They said: “Please don’t judge us as parents. Just let our family’s experience be a warning.

“At 5am, this morning, our son was rushed to hospital after the mobile phone he had plugged in beside him while sleeping caught fire.

“The phone ignited during the night, melted and fused to his shoulder and back causing serious burns. He woke in agony and his brother smelled smoked and shouted ‘you’re on fire’.”

They added: “Thankfully he is okay but he has sustained significant burns and now faces ongoing treatment, daily dressings and assessment by a specialist burns/plastics team.

“We’re sharing this because we had heard the warnings before but never imagined it could happen to us.”

Loughrea Fire and Rescue said: “Please see below pictures sent to us from a family close by.

“Never leave your phone plugged in overnight while you sleep as it will overheat and can go on fire.

“Switch off sockets and unplug chargers when not in use.”

They added: “It can happen to you. Thankfully this young man will be ok and we wish him well in his road of recovery ahead.”
