Galway has been named the most international city in Ireland.

It follows research carried out by the Central Statistics Office which shows that less than half of the city's residents were born in the county.

The new statistics examine population by area, its density and internal migration.

The study finds that one in four of the city's residents were born outside of Ireland.

The Galway city figures are in stark contrast to Cork where three quarters of the city's residents were born in the county.
