On the day his trial was due to begin at the Central Criminal Court a Galway man has pleaded guilty to a serious sexual assault.

The 40-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, yesterday (tues jan 29) pleaded guilty to the sexual assault of a woman in a house in Co Galway on a date unknown between September 1, 2004 and February 28, 2005.

Prosecuting counsel, Conor Devally, asked for the sentencing to be put back for a victim impact report.

Ms Justice O’Malley remanded the man on continuing bail to appear before her for sentencing in April.

She ordered that he be placed on the sex offender’s registrar and asked for a report from the Probation and Welfare Services.

She thanked the jury for their time and sent them home, before ordering that nothing could be published about the case that would tend to identify the complainant.
