Galway Library Service gets set for a new chapter

THE role of the Galway Library Service in providing a safer learning environment for children – as compared to mobile phones and social media – was emphasised by Conamara councillors at their area meeting on Friday in County Hall.
Councillors made their comments after hearing a report on the Galway Libraries Strategic Plan, presented by County and City Librarian, Liz Keane, where she outlined plans for the future of the service.
Clifden councillor, Eileen Mannion [FG], said that the role of the library service was never more important than it was today. "It provides a very welcome learning space for children and keeps them away from their screens," said Cllr. Mannion.

Independent Ireland councillor, Noel Thomas, said that he had recently joined a library branch and found it 'a brilliant experience' with the staff particularly friendly and helpful.
Cllr. Tom Welby [Ind.] said that the library offered a super service and was a far safer place for kids to learn rather than on their mobile phones.
A date for the return of the mobile service to Conamara was sought by Cllr. Máirtín Lee [FF] who said that it would be great to see it back in action.
Liz Keane said that the mobile vehicle serving the Conamara area was currently under repair but they were hoping to have it back as soon as possible, with plans to replace this existing vehicle with a new one.
She said that the Conamara Municipal District was supported by a comprehensive library service 'blending permanent branches with mobile and school-based outreach'.
