Galway has been put on the map of world-class marine research.

A unique eco system has been found in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean by a team of marine biologists led by a researcher from NUI Galway.

Patrick Collins from NUI Galway's Ryan Institute and his team investigated a vent system that is three thousand metres below the sea.

His team are the first to reach the vent, and will be cataloguing the creatures found there.

Patrick Collins says new animals have been brought back to NUIG for study.
