GALWAY JUDGE CALLS FOR TOUGHER FIREARMS PENALTIES

A Galway judge has called for tougher penalties for Firearms offences. Judge Mary Fahy wants to impose heavier fines and says current penalties are totally inadequate when dealing with dangerous weapons. She made her comments while handing down a one-month suspended sentence and 60 euro fine to a man guilty of possessing an unlicensed crossbow and sawn-off air rifle. 46-year-old courier and married father-of-two Thomas Costello pleaded guilty at Galway District Court yesterday to possessing a Parker Crossbow and a single shot sawn-off air rifle at his home in Knockdoemore, Claregalway, without having a firearms certificate for either weapon.
