Galway family expresses gratitude for their late father’s hospital care

A Conamara family’s gratitude for the way UHG looked after their dying husband and dad led them to organise a fundraiser in their own community – to then present a cheque for €10,000 to the hospital’s Patient Comfort Fund.
Richard McDonagh from Cill Chiaráin had been a patient in the Corrib Ward – and grateful for the care, compassion, and dignity shown to him - his family set out to give back in a meaningful way that would benefit future patients and their families.
Through a community-driven raffle at their business, Gala Cill Chiaráin, and the generous support of friends, neighbours, and customers, the family successfully reached their fundraising goal.
The cheque was presented to the Patient Comfort Fund by Richard’s wife Anne McDonagh and family.
Their donation will go directly towards enhancing patient comfort, supporting small but impactful improvements that make hospital stays more bearable for those in care and their families.
Speaking on behalf of her family, Richard’s daughter Anna Nic Dhonnchadha expressed her gratitude to hospital staff for their kindness and care.
We are deeply thankful to everyone who supported us in honouring our father
“We are deeply thankful to everyone who supported us in honouring our father. Dad was at the heart of our family – kind, hardworking and always thinking of others,” he said.
“His loss has left a huge void in our lives, but we are deeply grateful for the care, dignity, and compassion shown to him by the staff of the Corrib Ward at University Hospital Galway during his time there.
“The doctors, nurses and staff cared for him with such professionalism and respect, and they gave enormous support to us as a family during one of the most difficult times. They did everything possible to make sure he was comfortable and received the very best end-of-life care.
“Their kindness will never be forgotten. We hope this contribution will help bring comfort to other patients and families during difficult times,” she added.
Monique Mulholland, Clinical Nurse Manager 2, Corrib Ward, University Hospital Galway expressed sincere gratitude for the donation, noting the vital role that the Patient Comfort Fund plays in enhancing patient wellbeing.
“This generous contribution from the McDonagh family is a testament to the strength of community and the lasting impact of compassionate care,” she said.
“Donations like this allow us to provide additional comforts that truly make a difference to patients and their loved ones.”
