Galway Labour TD Colm Keaveney has called for swift government action to ensure farmers get a fair price for their produce.

The Labour Party Chairperson has brought the issue before the Dáil following this week's day of action at Leinster House by the farming community.

Hundreds of farmers travelled on buses from locations across Galway to attend the demonstration over issues including inequality in the food supply chain.

Deputy Keaveney told the Dáil that prices paid to producers are being drawn down as a result of the practices of the large retailers.

Speaking in reply, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton said there is an imbalance of power between suppliers and retail chains.

However he said there are proposals for new legislation for the grocery sector.
