GALWAY DRIVERS PAY 14 THOUSAND EURO TO COURT POOR BOX

Date Published: 05-Nov-2012
Galway motorists paid almost 14 thousand euro into the court poor box last year.
The stats, published in today's Irish Independent, show Galway had the 14th highest pay out rate when compared to other counties in the republic.
Road safety groups have condemned the practice of allowing drivers to pay into the poor box to escape a conviction.
Howver, the poor box is commonly used by judges for first time offenders, particularly in the district courts, and is a long established practice.
