Households in rural Galway are being urged to take responsibility for their dogs following a spate of attacks on livestock across the west.

The Irish Farmers Association has issued the warning ahead of lambing season when up to 2.5 million lambs are expected to be born around the country over the next three months.

It comes as farmers in the Moycullen area have recently reported serious losses due to marauding dogs that have been attacking cows in the area.

The latest attack was prior to Christmas and was one of at least six such incidents.

IFA National Sheep Committee Chairman James Murphy says lambing season is a crucial time for Galway farm families and attacks on stock have a serious impact on livelihoods.
