The HSE West is defending the level of use of ambulances amid concern from Galway GPs that it's inadequate.

According to today's Irish Times, several GPs in Galway who recently requested an ambulance were asked if a taxi would suffice.

There are now concerns that there is inadequate ambulance cover in the region, especially following the closure of Roscommon Hospital's A&E Department.

The HSE West has denied that there is any constraints on ambulance cover in the West stating that HSE vehicles are prioritised for front line.
