Galway Courthouse was evacuated on Wednesday due to a bomb scare.

The building at Courthouse Square was cleared while Gardaí checked that there was no suspicious object inside.

It appears to be related to a security alert at Loughrea Courthouse on Wednesday morning (June 10).

An Garda Síochána confirmed to the Galway City Tribune it was satisfied the alert was a hoax.

A spokesperson said investigations were ongoing.

A barrister who works in Galway said the courthouse was closed for about half an hour. Staff and members of the public were evacuated shortly before 10am.

The evacuation disrupted family law hearings scheduled for that morning.

“I’m 19 years practising and this is the first time I’ve heard of Galway Courthouse being evacuated. It appears to have been a hoax,” the barrister said.

A Galway Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí were made aware of a security alert at a premises at The Green, Loughrea, Co. Galway earlier this morning, Wednesday June 10.

“Following further enquiries in relation to that premises and a second premises at Courthouse Square, Galway, An Garda Síochána is satisfied that the alert has been deemed to be a hoax and the areas were declared safe. Investigations are ongoing.”
