A letter of intent has been issued to joint contractors GEM construction and Purcell Construction of Galway for the restoration of St. Mel's Cathedral in Longford.

The building was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day of 2009.

It's hoped the letter of intent will enable some work to begin before the end of this month.

Tenders were returned in June for the multi-million euro project.

Seamus Butler of St. Mel's Cathedral Project Committee says it's an important step forward.
