Title mission already over as United flop against Shels

GALWAY United can forget about winning the league title – and their chances of being involved in the promotion play-offs don’t look too promising either, after a humiliating night on the north side of Dublin on Friday.
The home side scored four, and could have added a couple more only for the heroics of Conor Kearns in the United goal, and the failure of the referee to award them what looked like a couple of legitimate penalty appeals.
The visitors were shocking and deserved what they got. With the mid-season break falling this weekend, they have a fortnight to mull over where they go from here, and for some of them, wherever it is they go, it won’t be as a United player, with John Caulfield suggesting after the game that some players weren’t up to the task and will be allowed to leave.
It may have been a reactionary comment in the immediate aftermath of the game, but if he does decide to let some players go, he’ll be spoilt for choice on Friday’s display, and the performances in the first 10 games of the season.
It is an appalling indictment on United that, despite the lavish spend and the move to a full-time set-up, the only teams they have beaten on the pitch are the bottom two of Cobh Ramblers and Wexford FC. The won the former with three penalties and an OG; and needed an injury-time goal to take the three points in the latter game.
They started reasonably well on Friday and had the first sight of goal after just 70 seconds, Ruairi Keating setting-up Padraic Cunningham after a mazy run down the right, but his shot was blocked out for a corner by the covering Aly Gilchrist, who was also on hand six minutes later to force Keating into shooting from a tight angle.
